Internist joins medical
staff
Stephen Bell, DO, has recently joined
the medical staff at Mercy Memorial Hospital System. He
is currently practicing primary care internal medicine
next to the Newport Medical Center, which is still under
construction and set to be fully operational sometime
this summer.
He attended medical school at Lake Erie College of
Osteopathic Medicine and Erie, Pa., and continued his
medical education at Henry Ford Hospital in Wyandotte,
where he completed a traditional internship. Dr. Bell
received further training during a residency in internal
medicine at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton
where he was chief resident. His responsibilities
included intensive patient care, along with the
education of patients, junior medical house staff and
medical students.
Dr. Bell maintains active membership in the American
College of Physicians, American College of Osteopathic
Internists, American Osteopathic Association, Christian
Medical and Dental Association and Michigan Osteopathic
Association.
Interestingly,
Dr. Bell also earned a bachelor's degree in history at the
University of California Irvine and went on to receive a
teaching credential in secondary education and a
master's degree in ancient and medieval history from
Western Washington University.
The Bell family consists of his wife, Michelle, who is
originally from rural British Columbia, Canada, and two
sons, Willem, 4, and Alex, 18 months, who are native
Michiganders. They can expect to be joined by a new
arrival due in late June.
In addition to the practice of adult primary care, Dr.
Bell maintains a professional interest in the prevention
and treatment of "Metabolic Syndrome / Syndrome X" and
bariatric medicine. Dr. Bell is currently working with
patients at the Newport site, located at 7825 North
